Homeowner FAQs
Battery Technology and Energy Storage
What is a home energy storage system?
A home energy storage system, often called a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), allows homeowners to store surplus electricity for later use. This surplus electricity typically comes from rooftop solar panels or the grid.
How does a home energy storage system work in a home?
Most home batteries store electricity as direct current (DC). When needed, this electricity passes through an inverter, converting it into usable alternating current (AC) for your home. The inverter also converts AC electricity back to DC for storage when the battery needs recharging. Your battery will charge, discharge, or remain idle based on your chosen settings.
Why do people buy home energy storage systems?
Many homeowners purchase battery systems to ensure power during grid outages. Additionally, batteries can save you money by charging when electricity is cheap and discharging when rates are high.
Why should I get a battery system instead of a generator?
Battery backup systems are quieter, cleaner, and require less maintenance than generators. They don't produce toxic fumes, can be installed indoors, are easily expandable, and are more environmentally friendly. Generators are also difficult to permit in some areas.
Product Information
What are your batteries made of?
Our batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) chemistry. We chose LFP for its safety, affordability, low toxicity, and long lifespan.
How long does it take to fully charge the battery?
The batteries typically take about two hours to fully charge.
How long does the battery last on a full charge?
The duration depends on the appliances you're running, how long you run them, and the size of your battery system. A larger battery can power more appliances for longer periods. Pairing a battery system with solar panels that recharge it daily extends backup time during prolonged outages. A local installer can help you determine the right size for your needs.
Are they compatible with my existing solar PV system?
Yes, our storage system integrates with most existing solar PV systems on the market.
How heavy is the battery? What are the dimensions? What is the energy capacity?
Detailed specifications can be found here.
How much does a home energy storage system cost?
The cost varies based on the system size and your location. Contact a local solar installer or licensed electrical contractor for an estimate.
Can the system power my entire home?
Yes, our batteries can provide whole-home backup, including major appliances like HVAC systems.
Can the battery be installed outdoors?
Batteries can be installed both indoors and outdoors. However, local regulations may apply, so please consult your installer for guidance.
Where do I buy a TeraHive system?
You can purchase and install a system through a local solar installer or licensed electrical contractor.

Do your batteries require any regular maintenance?
With no motors or moving parts, very little maintenance is needed. Keep the battery clean and dry, and periodically check for loose or corroded cables. Regular servicing by a local installer is recommended.
What is the warranty on the system?
We offer a 10-year warranty on our battery system.
What happens to the battery at the end of its life? Is it recyclable?
Yes, batteries can be recycled and their components reused. Contact a local installer for safe removal and disposal.
